Try clicking on the "HTML Source" tab below the comments to see what is going on. When you download metadata, or copy something in from a web page, you can get who knows what coding along with the text.
I often have to edit the html to fix really weirdly formatted comments, usually just by removing tags.
Also try the "Comments Cleaner" plugin, that often helps.
