Honestly at this point it does look like the only way to put books on non-wifi Kindles is to remove the DRM and sideload them via USB.
So if you want to buy your books from Amazon, then currently the easiest way is to get them via Kindle for PC as detailed in
this thread (see Method 2); you will have to convert the KFX book to AZW before sending to your Kindle. Otherwise you can consider buying your books at Kobo (whose DRM is easy to strip) or from other retailers offering DRM-free books.
