OK, so it was the screen but broken at an unusual part preventing it from showing those classic artefacts we know so well from broken screens. Just to learn from it, did your wife use the Pocketbook in case or did she use it with out it?
Disassembling displays is something I wouldn't consider even with the right equipment.
