The electronics industry had been moving towards non-replaceable batteries for years prior to iPhone: iPhone debuted in 2007. Compaq iPaq had non-replaceable batteries in 2000 (iPod is a year later in 2001). Palm Tungsten line had non-replaceable batteries in 2003. Sharp were moving towards non-replaceable batteries in the Zaurus line around that time as well.
