For me, it was a realization that comedies or action films were very unlikely to win a major award despite the number of people who voted with their wallets. A “serious” film was a lot more likely to win since the voters could feel good about voting for them. Then we had the year that Tatum O’Neal should have won the best actress but was moved to best supporting actress since she was too young to win best actress and there were older actresses who had paid their dues and so were more deserving of the best actress award.
