For me, the turning point was when they introduced the "Best Animated Feature" category after "Beauty and the Beast" was nominated for Best Picture. To me, it seemed like it was created to make it less likely that an animated movie might (gasp!) actually win the Best Picture Award.

Truly best picture win.
