Amazon is the essence of "evil empire." I quit Kindle about 10 years ago and love my Kobo Clara HD. I find the device comparable to the Kindle Paperwhite, and love that it is somewhat more hackable, i.e., customizable. Quit MS Windows long before that, and am using Linux myself.
Linux + Calibre + Kobo is a great combo for me.
