Can I still read the ebooks, bought on Amazon, with my Kobo Sage?

I have a Kindle Basic and a Kobo Sage. I prefer to read my ebooks on my Kobo.
Amazon has discarded the Download & Transfer option, which I used to store my books on my HD from which I sideloaded them via Calibre to my Kobo.
Is this still possible one way or another? I could and probably will buy my books elsewhere but I find that several authors that I follow, only (self) publish on Amazon.
