It's not dirty tricks. I'm assuming you're referring to the battery issue on old iPhones. Even what Apple did wasn't harmful to users, it kept phones running longer. People have grossly misunderstood what that was about.
As for your Kindle, have you added a lot of content recently? Have you done mods to it? What has happened aside from the firmware update?
