I am not OP, but I can think of a number of reasons:
  1. Because he can?
  2. KOReader is infinitely more featureful, you can tweak the rendering to your liking and you can customize it per book. That allows you to simply transferring .epub files and not bothering to convert to a (possibly degraded) .mobi first — simpler workflow.
  3. The default PDF renderer does not allow cropping as KOReader does.

I had no idea that there was a build of KOReader for the Kindle DX. I took mine out of the drawer it was in and installed it myself... Amazing!
