The screen can be damaged on the inside layers, even if the top layer is intact without visible scratches. Have you ever pressed a regular LCD screen like a laptop or tv and seen it make rainbows or light/color bursts about your finger? Imagine that but just enough to damage the fragile internal layers. It might not damage the top layer at all.
