The OpenInkPot firmware is a complete replacement for the original firmware. It is not an alternative with a few features changed - which are the firmwares that cause your tech. support fits. I would not expect Astak to support OpenInkPot, because it is completely different, but it is a good alternative for folks who are happy with a DRM-free Reader. Switching firmwares seems very robust on the EZ Reader. However, I keep the original Jinke firmware on my EZ Reader and run OpenInkPot via its "live SD" version. This means I boot up in Jinke but then run an application that reboots in OpenInkPot. Some people have found this to be less stable than the stand-alone OpenInkPot but I like being able to switch back to the standard firmware without reflashing. It is also a good way to try OpenInkPot.
