Would not surprise me. The Kindle App on Android starts at boot and connects to Amazon, even if not opened, any time there is an internet connection (even just background data on cell/mobile enabled). At least that was the case the last time I checked. Or they will cease eink and only have the app (the Fire is really Amazon's Android version with an app).
On more recent Android versions on some phones/ tablets you can remove an app from starting at boot.
