Therefore I assume your Scribe is jailbroken, and you are in fact using KOReader. If this is indeed the case, you can control the automatic 90-degree rotation through this menu item:
Gear icon —> Screen —> Rotation —> Lock auto rotation to current orientation

Apologies for the confusion, I poorly explained my issue; I have now edited my post to make clear the issue.
The unit is completely vanilla/stock with the standard Kindle reader...perhaps I should jailbreak it, although I still like to occasionally buy books from the store.
