Thanks for the history. I was only trying to make a point that there are standard (common) sizes that are still in use, even if the chemistry has changed (does anyone even make a Carbon Zinc flash light battery?

Many of the sizes you listed are still being used in Recent equipment .
Some cases, the manufacture just saved a few cents by eliminating the spring fingered battery carrier and a easy access door.
There are reasons for a unique shape or voltage, but it seems they are now simply being used for planned obsolescence. We do NOT NEED more trash.
