I know it's popular to harsh on Amazon especially right now and I've never been a fangirl, but I tend to think Amazon's been generous in terms of support and upgrade discounts on ancient Kindles. No device lasts forever.

My 3rd gen Kindle Keyboard is still my favourite device for reading in good light. I actually have several of these, there's an active market for them on ebay. They don't access the Kindle store anymore but they do download books from my Kindle library. They have robust wifi and the worldwide free 3g still works if I'm around a 3g mast. New batteries and screens are readily available and replacement is easy. Other parts can be swapped from other devices. I can see myself keeping one or more of these going practically forever so long as Amazon doesn't cut off access.
