I personally think it's absolutely right that authors rights are protected and they receive income for their work so I do get why there needs to be some way of preventing piracy. Equally I do get why if someone has paid for a book they want to have some means of using it on a different device although I think most publishers of ebooks say you are paying to only use it in their ecosystem in their T&Cs and so even de-drm'ing to use on a different device is against their rules
I'd sooner there was a way to link your account at bookstores between major publishers (Amazon, Kobo, etc) so you can transfer your digital rights between them. But that would require some agreement on revenue sharing between them etc and in turn that would impact pricing. That is not realistic.
