I'm not a luddite, I use Amazon, Google, Microsoft etc. etc. But I do try to make my personal backups wherever possible (for example, I back up my Gmail regularly to an external drive). You won't believe it but I just had another call with an Amazon agent and he was able to resolve the issue completely! I have to say I am impressed with them this time. They had actually sent a couple of emails asking me to get in touch again to try and resolve it so I thought I'd try one more time.
The guy stayed with it and managed to find the old account and change the email address associated with it. So I can now access the account and download those books to my new iPad. Brilliant!
Thanks for your help with this and to everyone who contributed. And yes, I will be backing up all my Kindle books!
