Precisely that. The default, comma, is best for regular books published in English.

Rules regarding use of periods in honorific abbreviations is one of those US/CA v UK/AU/NZ differences.

Most US style guides (except medical) mandate a period behind them all, so… Mr. Smith, Ms. Jones, Dr. Watson, Prof. Levy etc.

Most UK style guides mandate a period only if the last letter of the abbreviation is not the same as the full word, so… Mr Smith, Ms Jones, Dr Watson, Prof. Levy etc.

There is a definite trend outside the US to drop them entirely.
