With epub books, the things I've found that make them slow are:
- Large TOC
- Large chapters
- large images
- javascript
There really shouldn't be any javascript in an epub All the ones I've seen were web pages that were converted to epubs and not fully stripped of web stuff, but who knows.
Large chapters are split by calibre automatically if you convert it. It can also reduce resolution of images, but I don't remember if that's automatic. Either way, an epub to epub conversion in calibre might help.
PDFs have their own issues that can be fixed with a conversion, but I assume that's not the issue here.
