If you use the linux development environment you get a debian environment you can use. Currently it's debian bookworm.
It's usable but there are always a few issues. For instance, while calibre does run, usb devices are not fully pased through. Instead they are mounted on the chromeos side of the system and in effect, the mount point is shared with the linux development environment, so I can't use calibre's direct Kobo support. Also, I have to use the QT xcb display option.
