Like I said before, the modifications in the test version were read only. To create the graphic, the plugin just read the database, no data is written, so it cannot wipe your data.
Then you said about your backup and I thought this may be the cause. Maybe your backup was being done while you were editing your database (adding a new book, or a new reading entry). That could possibly cause problems.

The backup only gets doe when you close calibre.
I really have no idea why I lost my data after installing the 2nd text plugin.
