I doubt that's avoidable. Ereaders have surprisingly small batteries for how long they last, but that's because they don't really do much of anything most of the time. Playing audio is doing something all the time.
Wrt the OP, there is
potentially a relatively quick solution if you're willing to put in some leg work (but there are no guarantees whatsoever). If you can get something like
termusic to work, and that's a big if, you can control it through the terminal plugin in KOReader.
Also strong emphasis on "something like." I merely did a quick search for "terminal music player" and that's the first result that popped up with support for remembering playback positions.
