When I was in grade school I used to buy book adaptions of movies because at that time (1960/1970) there was no home video. As an example, I read the James Blish adaptions of the episodes of Star Trek: Original Series (each book adapted six episodes) and read most episodes before seeing them on television.
It gave me a way to take the movies with me, although sometimes there were significant differences. As an example, the book of Escape from Witch Mountain was very different from the movie. Although it's a later book, the novelization of TRON has interesting additions from the movie (such as when Flynn refused to kill a program, they show the impact on the video game machine in the Real World).
