Your assumption is correct; the python extension currently doesn’t run on so-called “hard float” firmwares, i.e. anything above 5.16.2.1.1. It would have to be rebuilt for HF and this hasn’t been done yet; whether it will ever be done is not clear, as the most popular feature of the screensaver extension (displaying the book cover on the lock screen) is now supported natively by the official Kindle firmware.
