I've posted this before. An old B&N Glow3 with a GPS module hooked internally to a serial port. I gave up on the concept because the module was so slow to acquire signal. I do my own local maps in KML with features that I add. On my normal phone the colors are a big plus. You have to be familiar with the map in B&W to decypher it.
The graphic is the latest version with added cardinal directions and the sun. The sun only makes sense on a map if YOU are always the center point. With a clear sky it's very helpful and more accurate than the magnetic compass.
