I used symlinks in Author, Publisher and Tag folders from NT4.0 onwards That's essentially what Windows Libraries use to provide access to the same data from different directories (indexes). On XP and later I used Shinagl's LSE, with Kimura's Symliink driver on XP.
Then I found calibre. I still use LSE to create Symlinks, Hardlinks etc.
