I was using the following word count definitions and yes, there is overlap:
Short story: usually over 1,000 words to 10,000 words
Novelette: 7,500 to 19,000 words
Novella: 10,000 to 40,000 words
Novel: over 40,000 words
Those are reasonable definitions. You do need overlap.
Essay: 100 words to 2000 words?
Epic/long: 180,000+ words?

A short story often is a different style / structure to a Novella.
I'd not seen Novelette before, but that makes sense. I guess more like a novella/novel than short story in structure/style?
