MR and Calibre share the same time frame for me. (MR was where I discovered the EZReader)

While I was waiting for my device, I set up a table and a Laptop + Flat bed scanner and a bar code reader and started documenting my paperback collection (>800 books).
Some were so old, that they did not have an ISBN and many of the covers Calibre found were Modern editions, which is why the Flat bed scanner.

The next steps were BAEN CD's and the Free Library. A side note: Many were already in Calibre as Dead Tree editions.
