Well that's just it. In the cenario descibed having a cover makes no difference, because covers do not automatically and always fall shut when you fall asleep and loose hold of your reader. At least none of my covers ever miraculously closed, when I fell asleep reading, hence the joke I made.

I am not even sure if a slim case cover would rescue a reader when one pokes their elbow into it, while getting up. My cover didn't rescue the display in my bag when I took a tumble.

A cover might help, but there is no guarantee.
