I prefer the "Show category" in the context menu. It is faster to get to, and it isn't there if there is nothing to show. It is also in the Tag browser preferences if for some reason you can't access the empty space.
@chaley - maybe it's all moot anyway, I discovered a couple of 'hidden' features.

Not sure this is by design, or happenstance:

If I select the Change <catname> category icon option, and Cancel out of the File select dialogue, then that category and its children will not have any icons. If I do that for all Categories I get an icon-free Tag Browser, which I prefer to having the category icons repeated on the partition items.

As can be seen, I can still attach icons to individual items, not that I will be.

And, the Show Category context menu is available in the context menu of the Category nodes - that's ideal for moi… now I've noticed it
