Convert your ePub to KF8. Then use Polish books > Add soft hyphens and then you'll have hyphenation and no large gaps.

There is a bug in the Kindle firmware where sometimes the chosen side loaded font needs to be selected even though it already is. You get a sans-serif font instead. Go to the AA menu and select a different font and select the font you want. That fixes it.
