However, you can get most of the way there by adding a template for the default. If the template returns a non-existent file name then no item values will have an icon unless overridden by some other rule. The category and the partitioning entries will still have the category icon.

You could also do it by making an empty icon and having the template return that.
My suggestion was to hide category item icons for all categories, not hide them a per category basis, but your trick gets me most of the way there, maybe I can 'hide' the partition icons with a transparent icon.
