One of the reasons that Babylon 5 was so good is that it had one person running the entire series, and he had everything mapped out in advance, including trapdoors to accommodating cast members leaving. I also liked that he had characters grow and change over the course of the series, with some ending up in an unexpected place (such as Londo and Vir).
