Had fw 15.16.2.4 installed, performed winterbreak -> hotfix -> kual / mrpi (marek) -> renamed OTA bins. All seemed good. In a few hours picked up the device and Kual no longer works, giving an error.
Checked fw version - it's 5.17.1.0.3

I had the same problem with KO3. Originally the device came with 5.17.1 but somehow it ended up with 5.17.1.0.3.
Here's how I fixed this:
- Turn on Airplane mode
- Open Kindle Store
- Enable WiFi when prompted
- Click on the Winterbreak logo
- Copy Update_KUAL*.bin to device
- Settings > Update Your Kindle
Essential redone the Winterbreak + Hotfix steps from the kindlemodding guide. KUAL worked again.
