I've had loads of Kobo ereaders and bought ebooks from Kobo. I've never used the Kobo Desktop. Nothing (buying, loading, managing, registration, firmware changes) needs it. I don't use ADE either.
Over 10 years ago I installed Sony and Amazon Kindle PC software and used them maybe once. Also pointless.
