I had a PB Touch Lux 3 for several years, and really suffered from the highlighting system's low performance (not to mention the note taking one), and ended up using a really disappointing and inefficient method similar to what describes ArmadilloPilot here above.
Granted, that was a 2015-device... But I have been following tests of PB new models, and it still seems so bad on that aspect, considering for instance PB Verse Pro as opposed to cheaper Kindle (which I don't want) or Kobo (which I am not so inclined to go for, but that I am currently reconsidering due to the very acceptable highlighting/annotation perf of the new Clara BW or Libra models): https://youtu.be/JLsFAFFP-fM?t=378

PocketBook Verse Pro (Oct. 2023):
- Dual Core 1 Ghz
- 512MB RAM
- E-Ink Carta 1200 screen

Kobo Clara BW (Apr. 2024):
- MediaTek MT8113L ARM A53 1 GHz
- 512MB RAM
- E-Ink Carta 1300 screen (said to be 25% more responsive than E-Ink Carta 1200)

Probably the screen of a newer generation helps the Kobo regarding the highlighting feature, but I am afraid that this is not the only issue, since Verse Pro Color (with Kaleido 3) is nowhere near Kobo Clara BW (or Kobo Libra Colour which features a Kaleido 3 too) on that: https://youtu.be/Qp12nd1RDq0?t=458

Anyway, I'd be very interested if someone could show me how significant is the improvement using KOreader on recent PocketBook device regarding highlighting/notes taking!
Here's a video of KOReader highlighting in action on the Pocketbook Verse Pro: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/_6YcHS_X8kI

KOReader is no speed demon on the Verse Pro, but I find highlighting a lot less frustrating to use than the Pocketbook stock reader.

I also own a Kobo Clara 2E; highlighting in KOReader is significantly faster on the Clara 2E and the BW should be even faster than the 2E. If you're getting a Kobo, get the Clara BW like you discussed, the Clara 2E has a very buggy touch panel that makes highlighting a nightmare which is why I'm trying out the Pocketbook as a potential replacement (that and the page-turn buttons!). The BW shouldn't have the buggy touch panel that the 2E does as per the discussion I linked to.
