Sigil is not removing any spaces. The problem is that you have converted your ePub to KePub using a version of KePub Output that does remove some spaces. You would need to install the latest version, delete the KePub, and convert your ePub to KePub. It would take a rather long time to find out which KePub have missing spaces so it's best to redo them all. It's more then just before italics. I cannot say where all the missing spaces are. This is why it's best to convert from ePub to KePub using the latest plugin.

Also, you'll want the latest version of KoboTouchExtended because an older version also had the same problem. So any KePub on your Kobo that you converted using KoboTouchExtended, you should resend to your Kobo from the source ePub. You won't know which KePub have missing spaces or not. So resend them all.

Remember, this has nothing to do with Sigil.
