Strange, you need only the following:
  • Activating feature via Settings > Energy saving and privacy > Automatically sleep and wake up;
  • Use the right spot, mostly somewhere above bottom right of screen.
I personally never use a cover and knowing that the so-called hall-sensor which does the trick also consumes extra power, I always deactivate this feature.
