The .acsm files need redeemed by a copy of ADE. Or more usefully redeemed by a plug-in added to Calibre that removes Adobe DRM.
The acsm files expire. So when you have set up a mechanism to get the epub, you need to go back to the website and download again.
For education you can rename the now probably expired URLLink.acsm to URLLink.txt and open it. It's a small file that tells the ADE program what to get.
If you go the ADE route (nearly impossible on Linux) you need to "register" the Sony ereader with ADE. If that fails, then only the deACSM (or maybe deDRM) plugin on Calibre will work (no support on those plugins here except where to get them) and it works on Mac, Linux and Windows for ANY ereader that takes epub.
I also have Calibre epub-epub conversion remove white-space and line-height from CSS as they mess up.
