Ah, it appears that there's a difference in how it's handled depending on the pen style mode. With the highlighter mode you can start a highlight, then just continue to draw a line down over several lines and then a tail across the last part that you want. It will create a highlight on all of the text from start to end that you can then turn into an underline style. With the pen mode you can draw through words on a single line, but I don't see that it can do more than a just that line at a time without activating Active Canvas and make the strokes a drawing instead of a highlight.
