Not sure what functionality is missing.
In my setup (calibre on a chromebook installed using the official calibre linux download) if I search for a book by (say by Wells) it displays a list of books. Then as long as I have the "Open in external browser" checkbox UNCHECKED, when I select a book, it displays the various formats available. Then, when I select one of them it does the download and adds to calibre.
