EU isn't even a Federation or Confederation and is democratic anyway. It's not a super state. Not all members use the euro currency nor implement all decisions. Some nations not in the EU have implemented EU decisions as local laws and some nations not in the EU use the euro currency.
There is one British Colony that uses US dollars.
Nations can leave the EU.
States can't leave the USA.
China certainly is a totalitarian state.
