Kindle PW1 display gone wonky

My Kindle PW1 display is acting up. I've attached pictures. At first I thought the display was broken, but after a reboot it worked fine until I plugged it into my Macbook to transfer some books. Now when I do a forced reboot by holding the power button it does a full screen refresh (a few full black and then full white flashes) and then shows the startup screen just briefly before it goes wonky again. This appears to be a software issue, but I'm not sure what, nor why it worked briefly.

Any suggestions on what I might try to resolve this?
