The Kaleido colour filter sits on top of the screen, so it's always there. BW content is technically full resolution, but since the Kaleido filter is in the way, it will look grainier than it would on a non-Kaleido device. Colour content is lower resolution, because the Kaleido filter is an RGB matrix, so in order to simulate various colours, e.g. R+B = purple, it takes multiple pixels' worth of screen real estate.
