The stupid extra magnets on a Sage are for attaching the poor design "power cover". Nothing to do with sleep / wake. Unfortunately they are glued in so hard to remove. Opening the case is easy, but take care about the power cover ribbon as the main PCB is on front of case and the small PCB for the 4 power connector dots (not USB) is on the rear, which is also a design flaw.

There might be 8 and they add weight.

I'd like a mono Sage 2 without them and a bigger power cell, no power cover option. The power cover idea was a fail on the Kindle Oasis and is a fail on the Kobo Sage. Also more reliable buttons. It's useless for cue/narration. The original Libra is the only one with reliable buttons. The Libra 2, while better than the Sage for buttons, isn't reliable enough.
