ETA: okay, well, the problem seems to have been that somehow the WinUSB driver had just... unloaded itself? because having Zadig set it up again fixed the issue and I was able to read partitions fine. will report back if I encounter any other issues but I suspect it'll be fine, although this doesn't explain why bkerler's EDL didn't work.
