That's what I mean. I can buy the books from the Kobo shop, Google or my favourite bookstore, remove the DRM, make a backup copy, change the format and read it on my Kindle e-readers (whether it's a PW5 or a PW6). Exactly the same as if I have a Kobo Sage or a PocketBook Era. I am not locked into Amazon. Amazon doesn't stop me from reading books bought elsewhere. On the contrary, it provides me with tools to send them to me.

Can I also use Amazon's "ecosystem"? Yes, you can. I can buy books from Amazon and download them directly to my Kindle e-readers, or I can use KU if I want to. And I can also remove DRM from them using exactly the same tools as if I have a Kobo Sage or a PocketBook Era. There is no difference whatsoever in that respect.

You want to call that a "walled garden". Fine. But being outside (having a Kobo Sage or a PocketBook Era instead of a Kindle PW6) doesn't give you more options or make you freer. It's a semantic illusion.
