Encyclopedia Brown was one of the first mystery series I remember reading, getting the books (if I remember correctly so many decades later) from Scholastic via my school. Which clearly helped create an addiction . Now the first book, Encyclopedia Brown, Boy Detective, is on sale in the US for $1.99 - info and links are in this post on the Childrens/YA thread.
