I feel let down by internet spies. There wasn't even a whiff of this until about 2 days ago! I guess I'm just saying that if I had known this new model was in the works I would have waited.
You know, I heard the same thing from Kindle 1 buyers when the Kindle 2 came out.

1. This is not a "better model". This is a bigger, presumably more expensive model. There's nothing to think it's "better" save for the PDF support which is a direct consequence of the larger screen. If you wanted a larger screen eInk reader, why buy a smaller one? I crave it too, but I recognize that my Kindle 2 is still just fine for reading most books.

2. This Kindle probably won't be available until the fall semester at colleges. So you're getting your advance warning. But it's not meant to "replace" the Kindle 2, and Amazon isn't going to stop selling the Kindle 2 in favor of this one like they did Kindle 1.

3. I don't know why you didn't hear a whiff of this but you have bad spies. The rumor of a larger screen Kindle for textbooks has been around since before the Kindle 2 launch, and was reiterated just a few weeks after the Kindle 2 launch. I am surprised they're announcing it now (I didn't expect to hear anything more about it until June) but this is hardly a surprise if you had your ear to the ground.
